Apple dropped 1.2% on Friday and still ended the session as the world's most valuable company again. That tells you how rough the week closed for the AI trade.

The numbers: Apple closed at $344.63 a share, for a market cap of $5.03 trillion. Nvidia sank 4.2% to $204.64, landing at $4.93 trillion. At its low Nvidia was down almost 6%, at $200.92. It's the first time Apple has overtaken Nvidia since it briefly did so in late July 2026.

What I find interesting is the reason. Reuters tied the tech selloff to Intel and Amazon results that deepened worries about AI spending and returns. According to Bloomberg, investors were looking for the perceived safety of the iPhone maker amid those concerns. Apple took the top spot by falling less than Nvidia on a down day.

My read is that this is a sentiment check on AI capex more than a vote of excitement for Apple. When the market's preferred hiding place is a hardware company with a familiar business, it suggests people want to see returns on all that AI investment before they keep paying up for it. I'd like to know whether this holds through Apple's own earnings, expected Nov. 2, or whether it reverses as quickly as July's swap did. $AAPL
