$CAT was at $630 pre-market at 13:26 UTC on October 29, 2026, 11.69% below its $713.38 prior regular-session close. For shareholders, I think the question is how much of this quarter's wider margin can last.
- Q3 revenue rose 17% to $20.682 billion, while operating profit rose 38% to $4.214 billion. Profit grew more than twice as fast as sales, which is what catches my eye in these results.
- Operating margin reached 20.4%, up from 17.3% a year ago. Caterpillar says the profit impact of higher sales volume was the primary driver of operating profit growth.
- Higher volume added $2.2 billion to revenue growth, and favorable pricing added $663 million. I'd watch both in coming quarters before assuming this margin holds.
- Adjusted EPS was $7.20, versus $4.95 a year ago. Reuters also reported that Caterpillar left its annual revenue-growth outlook and tariff-cost forecast unchanged, and that $128 million in tariff recoveries benefited operating profit.
I see strong operating leverage in the quarter, with a real question about its durability. The pre-market decline makes that question harder for shareholders to ignore.
