FY2026 deficit widened $217B; gross interest alone rose $144B, about 66% of the extra red ink

Treasury data out Friday put the US fiscal 2026 deficit at $1.99 trillion, with record receipts of $5.40 trillion and outlays of $7.40 trillion. Gross interest on the debt hit a record $1.36 trillion, up $144 billion.

The deficit widened by $217 billion year over year. Interest alone rose $144 billion, so about 66% of the extra red ink is just the cost of carrying what we already owe.
