If you run a crypto company, January 2027 is worth circling. Elizabeth Warren, currently Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Committee, is reportedly expected to become its Chair when Democrats take control of the Senate after winning both chambers in the midterms, succeeding Tim Scott. It isn't formally decided, but Senate watchers call a competing bid unlikely.

The gavel brings more staff and subpoena power. Per the WSJ, she could use it to investigate alleged insider trading involving prediction markets, scrutinize consumer-protection practices at crypto companies, and examine allegations of corruption involving Trump and his family.

Also in scope: the administration's mass firings of financial regulatory staff and potential conflicts of interest at companies tied to the president. Richard Blumenthal and Maxine Waters are reportedly expected to join an aggressive crypto-industry investigation.

The hearings will get the attention, and the prediction market angle is the one I'd watch closest. That industry has grown fast without much oversight.

What I'm most curious about is housing. Warren and Scott already got a bipartisan bill done: the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, aimed at expanding homebuilding and financing and restricting large corporate investors from buying single-family homes, is now law. A source says she plans to push housing affordability from the chair. That track record makes housing the likeliest place her chairmanship produces more law, not just hearings.
