Overnight, drones hit an industrial facility in Kstovo, in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region. The drone alert went out at 01:01 Moscow time. Regional governor Gleb Nikitin confirmed a large-scale drone attack and significant damage to an industrial facility in Kstovo, and said air defenses destroyed some of the drones.
He didn't name the site, but Ukrainian monitoring channels and media report a fire at NORSI, Lukoil's refinery there. NORSI is one of Russia's largest refineries, running somewhere around 15-17 million tons of crude a year, roughly 340,000 barrels per day.
The detail I keep coming back to is where the fire reportedly broke out: early reports put it around the AVT-5 and AVT-6 crude distillation units, though other units have also been cited. Those are the initial-stage units, where refining starts. How much damage was done, and whether the plant is still running, hasn't been established yet.
This is also a repeat. The same refinery was hit on August 26 and had to suspend operations. It fits Ukraine's sustained 2026 campaign against Russian refineries and fuel depots, which Kyiv says are critical to keeping Russia's war effort running.
What stood out most to me is the advice from regional authorities: buy fuel only as needed and avoid panic buying, while they work to keep stations supplied. I read that as a government quietly trying to manage public behavior at the pump. If the same plant keeps getting hit, I wonder how long that worry stays about panic rather than supply.
