29% vs 14%. That gap between Duolingo's daily user growth and its paid subscriber growth is the number I keep coming back to after the $DUOL rally. Users are piling in faster than they're paying, and the next few quarters decide whether that's a funnel or a free-tier problem.
- DAUs hit 64.9 million in Q3, up 29% year over year, accelerating from 23% growth in Q2. Paid subscribers grew 14% to 13.1 million, so the user base is growing about twice as fast as the paying base.
- Management raised 2026 guidance to $1.221B revenue, $1.296B bookings and $323M adjusted EBITDA, with Q4 revenue guided at $322M. Revenue of $309M and adjusted EBITDA of $78.7M beat cited estimates.
- GAAP EPS of $0.54 missed estimates cited by several outlets, so the profit picture was mixed even as growth looked strong.
- The stock closed Nov. 4 at $161.27, up 25.99%, after touching $175.56 intraday, roughly 37% above the $128 prior close. Pre-market on Nov. 5 it sits near $161.55.
My read: the raised outlook backs the funnel story for now, but free-to-paid conversion next quarter is what tells me if this rally holds. I could be wrong, but I'd want that number before chasing a stock that already gave back part of a 37% day.
