51% is the number Nvidia is reportedly putting on its cloud customers' China business.
51% is the number Nvidia is reportedly putting on its cloud customers' China business.
The Financial Times, citing five people with knowledge of the matter, reported that Nvidia is telling its data center and cloud computing clients to reduce their exposure to Chinese customers. On future contracts, those clients would need to sell at least 51% of their services to non-Chinese companies. Existing agreements aren't affected.
Reuters, relaying the report, said it couldn't immediately verify it independently, so I'm treating this as reported, not confirmed. Nvidia's public response spoke generally about U.S. policy and American-built infrastructure. It neither confirmed nor denied the 51% line.
The stock had a rough session. Nvidia closed down 3.17% at $200.14, about $4.82T in market value. It barely got above the prior close at $206.79, slid to a low of $199.72 (-3.37%), and finished near the bottom of the range.
It was little changed after hours at $200.70. Coverage tied the weakness across chip and data-center names to worries that the midterm results could bring tougher AI and data-center oversight. Nothing ties the drop specifically to the China report.
What strikes me is the direction of control here. Nvidia is reportedly dictating the customer mix of the companies buying its hardware, a step past choosing who it sells to. That's an unusual amount of reach for a supplier.
My guess is the 51% line has more to do with regulatory pressure than with Nvidia's own preferences, but I'd want to see confirmation before reading too much into it. If it holds, every cloud provider negotiating a new Nvidia contract just picked up a compliance question about their own customer base. With regulators now a bigger variable for the whole data-center trade, that question gets harder, not easier.
