After Trump confirmed limited US strikes on Qeshm Island late Friday, the blockade on Iran got more layers. On Saturday, US Central Command disabled the M/V Huda, a St. Kitts-flagged cargo ship, in the Gulf of Oman. CENTCOM says it had just visited an Iranian port, ignored repeated warnings, and tried to leave regional waters. A US aircraft fired precision munitions at its stern after the crew was told to leave the targeted spaces.
The count is muddy. ABC News reports it as the 11th ship disabled since the blockade resumed in July, but the CENTCOM tally quoted by RFE/RL puts it at five, with 147 commercial vessels redirected. Also on Saturday, CENTCOM announced Task Force Iron Gate.
It is a roughly 20-person team in Tampa that will coordinate with other agencies to restrict weapons, dual-use tech, sanctioned materials and illicit revenue moving across Iran's land borders and the Caspian. On paper, the pressure campaign now reaches the roads as well as the sea lanes.
Then today, Iran's IRGC Navy said two oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines, one east of the Strait of Hormuz and one inside it. It accused both of switching off their navigation systems and using an unauthorized route. To be clear, this is unverified. The IRGC didn't name the vessels or give crew details, and no independent maritime authority had confirmed either incident as of publication.
My read: even unconfirmed, the claim puts mines into the conversation about the Strait of Hormuz. If either fire holds up, the de-escalation story around the Qatar proposal gets much harder to sell. I'm also still waiting for someone to explain how any of this brings gas prices down.
