Google Cloud announced on October 23, 2026 that Anthropic-managed Claude is generally available next to the existing Google-managed path. My read: this turns an enterprise AI decision into a trade between speed and control, and the split customers pick will tell us a lot about where AI spend concentrates.

  • Both paths carry the same four models: Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, at standard pricing with eligible Google Cloud commitment drawdown. Procurement barely changes either way.
  • The Anthropic-managed path gets Claude platform features on day zero, including Managed Agents (still beta), skills and code execution. Anthropic acts as the data processor there.
  • The Google-managed path keeps Google as processor under existing agreements, with VPC Service Controls, CMEK and U.S., EU and APAC data residency. New Claude features arrive once integrated.
  • This fits my view that big tech wins. Google keeps the bill and the commitment drawdown whichever operator customers choose.

What I'm watching next is whether regulated buyers stay with Google-managed for the compliance controls while builders chase day-zero agent features with Anthropic. If the Anthropic path pulls real enterprise volume, that's a point in favor of the lofty IPO talk I've been skeptical of. I could be wrong, but I expect compliance to keep winning in the big accounts for now.
