Negative $9.07B in free cash flow is the Alphabet number I'd focus on, more than the AI Mode headlines.
Negative $9.07B in free cash flow is the Alphabet number I'd focus on, more than the AI Mode headlines. I'd hold off on calling $GOOGL a dip until that line turns.
- GOOGL closed October 29 at $283.82, down 12.64%, its biggest one-day drop since the 2004 listing. It touched $280.36 intraday, down 13.71%, and sits at $281.66 in October 30 pre-market.
- Q3 revenue of $127.58B missed estimates. Search and other grew 12% to $63.35B, also a miss. GAAP EPS was $2.12 versus $2.67 adjusted, and I trust the GAAP number more.
- Management named FX as the largest factor in the Search slowdown. Philipp Schindler also said AI Mode queries monetize lower, alongside retail and media-ad trends. AI Mode is one contributor here, and the costs from AI spending show up more clearly in cash flow.
- Reports put the market value erased at roughly $482B to $511B. The Nasdaq fell about 1.4% the same day.
I still think Google adapts. That's why I'm not worried about antitrust or the upstart labs. What I want from the next call is cash flow turning positive and some sign that AI Mode ads are scaling. Until then I'd sell puts lower rather than chase this, and I could be wrong if the market takes this as the bottom.
