Oil bulls who priced in a long Iran war just got hit the hardest. I lean toward this being the start of the wind-down, though no deal exists yet and I could be wrong.
- Brent fell 8.7% on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and settled at $94.62, below $100. Early Thursday, Nov. 5, it traded around $93.82 intraday, on track for a fourth straight daily decline per Reuters.
- Reuters links the move to expectations that the Democratic sweep of Congress in the Nov. 3 midterms could constrain escalation and increase pressure for diplomacy. My read: the election is the catalyst here.
- Bond holders came out ahead. Hedgeweek, citing the FT, reported government bonds gaining alongside the oil drop, with UK and French 10-year yields lower Wednesday. In my view, cheaper oil could ease my inflation worry.
- The risk to my lean: an Iranian official told Reuters the two sides remain far from a deal. Qatar-mediated talks are hope, nothing signed.
My read is that the market is pricing a Washington with less appetite for this war, which fits my bearish oil lean. If talks collapse and this turns full-blown, oil gives the whole move back fast.
