The number I keep coming back to is $4 billion. Reuters says DoorDash is in talks to buy Instacart for roughly $17B, and Instacart was worth about $13B as of Friday's close. DASH holders reacted on October 26 like they're the ones paying that gap.
- The Wall Street Journal reported advanced talks on October 26, with Bloomberg and Reuters following. Reuters said a deal could be finalized as soon as Wednesday, with no guarantee. Bloomberg said no final decision has been made.
- DASH closed down 6.10% at $168.44. CART closed up 7.87% at $60.88 after trading lower earlier in the session, then recovering once the Journal report hit.
- Reuters reports Instacart's separate talks with Uber are no longer active, which leaves DoorDash at the table on its own.
- Instacart declined to comment to Reuters and DoorDash didn't immediately respond, so this is still a reported negotiation. Terms could change or the talks could fall apart.
My read: this looks like the usual pattern where a deal is good for the company being bought and the buyer has to prove it. I'd want to see the actual terms and how regulators view two of the biggest grocery delivery names combining before deciding whether DoorDash is overpaying. Could be wrong, but that $4B gap is where the debate starts.
