The same Anthropic S-1/A that showed the operating line swinging to a $567M loss in Q3 also added new risk-factor language, reportedly on page 29 and separate from the financials. I think it deserves more attention than the numbers.

The filing says Anthropic's growing use of AI to speed up its own R&D may push model capabilities ahead of its ability to build matching safety, alignment and security measures. It adds that the company has in the past not identified a significant acceleration in its rate of development until after it occurred.

It also says internal estimates for future models indicate it "may imminently meet" its Responsible Scaling Policy definition of "dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI."

Anthropic says no current model has been designated as exceeding that threshold and it is still assessing the data. It also says it does not expect to safely let Claude fully autonomously design and build successive frontier models without meaningful human supervision, and it is considering RSP updates to keep humans in control.

Andrew Curran, who first flagged the language, estimates the threshold at roughly two years of 2018-2024 progress compressed into one. David Iach called that a lax RSI benchmark.

What stays with me is the admission that they have already missed an acceleration once. If detection lags reality, how much confidence should anyone place in "imminently" as a forecast?
