XLE down 5.79% to $62.82 in afternoon trading on Nov. 4 is the number I'm watching. It fits my lean that the Iran war gets wound down and oil falls, now with a Democratic Congress in the mix.
- Energy was among the weakest sectors on Nov. 4 as US stocks broadly recovered after Democrats won both chambers. Futures actually fell sharply first, then reversed.
- Reports tied the pressure on oil and energy shares partly to expectations that the result shifts Washington's Iran policy and improves the odds of diplomacy.
- Crude itself was choppy: Brent traded roughly $101 to $104 and WTI roughly $93 to $97, falling, rebounding, then sliding again.
- Countervailing risks are still live: conflict-related supply threats plus an API-reported 5.27 million barrel US crude inventory draw.
A near-6% intraday drop in the sector ETF on a choppy oil day tells me traders are repricing the de-escalation odds, and I lean the same way. If the war goes full-blown, oil runs and I'm wrong, so the next few sessions matter more than one day.
