Bitcoin taps $85,000 as short liquidations surge and ETF inflows return
Bitcoin's climb above $85,000 exposes how dependent short-term moves remain on mechanical triggers rather than fresh conviction.
The advance lined up with roughly $648 million in short liquidations once resistance gave way, while spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $592.5 million in inflows over September 17-18. Reports tie part of the lift to Bitcoin closing above its 50-week moving average for the first time in 45 weeks, a break that can draw systematic trend followers and momentum accounts.
Investing.com also credits the SEC's recent tokenized-stock trading exemption with lifting sentiment.
Still, the asset sits 31% below its October peak near $126,000 and is down less than 3% year-to-date. That distance underscores the tension: a technically driven response after months of consolidation can produce a sharp bounce without altering the broader range.
Market structure clearly sets near-term direction, yet how far the same mechanism can carry price absent new fundamental drivers stays the obvious limit.
