Last week I wrote about OpenAI trimming its round, with about $11B committed. As of Friday that $11B is actually wired, according to Bloomberg's sources, with Reuters relaying the report. OpenAI closed the first tranche at a $1.25 trillion valuation, which is the reduced target, not the original one.

For context on the reset: Reuters says OpenAI initially sought up to $30 billion, and two investors it cited said the valuation came down from $1.5 trillion. Earlier reporting put the original ask at $30 billion or more at about $1.4 trillion. The round could still grow to as much as $20 billion, with the remainder expected in the coming weeks.

The investor list is now out. Bloomberg named Coatue and T. Rowe Price in the first close, and reported SoftBank, Sequoia, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz and UAE backers as participants in the round. Reuters separately named SoftBank and MGX, the UAE state-backed investor. OpenAI declined to comment.

My read: the lower number held and the cash landed, which matters more than the headline valuation. Seeing T. Rowe Price, a firm rooted in public markets, wire money into a private round tells me there is still appetite at $1.25 trillion, at least from investors like it. The question I'm watching is whether the remaining tranche gets the round to $20 billion or whether it settles closer to $11 billion.
