OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has proposed donating 5% of the company’s equity to a U.S. sovereign wealth fund, according to reports from the Financial Times and TechCrunch on July 2, 2026. The move, still in early talks, is framed as a way to build goodwill with the current administration and soften political resistance, especially as President Trump has previously suggested giving “pieces” of AI company equity to the public.

OpenAI itself laid groundwork for this idea in an April 2026 policy paper, “Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age,” which argued that returns from such a fund could be distributed directly to citizens, broadening access to AI-driven economic gains. The proposal stands in contrast to Senator Bernie Sanders’ more aggressive June plan, a 50% one-time tax on AI company stock to fund the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act.

While Altman’s offer is symbolic at this stage and would require congressional action, it feels less like charity and more like strategic positioning. My take? OpenAI isn’t just shaping the future of AI, they’re trying to shape the political narrative around it, offering a nibble to avoid a full-scale grab.
