The number I'm watching is October 28, the day SK hynix reports. Market coverage tied a US filing to a rally in a Seoul chipmaker on October 27, and the read-through is only worth what the earnings confirm.
- Anthropic publicly filed its S-1 on October 26, disclosing $16.3 billion in first-half revenue. CNBC also reported $80 billion in first-half losses. That's a proposed listing, and Asia traded it like a done deal on October 27.
- SK hynix closed October 27 up 5.18% at 1,341,000 won; one report recorded an intraday high of 1,380,000 won. Korean media also reported a possible roughly 16 trillion won special dividend, which the company hasn't confirmed, so the Anthropic link isn't the only driver.
- In the US on October 26, $NVDA closed up 2.39% at $216 and $MU rose 2.98%. Micron also had a Bank of America note on memory demand behind it. Premarket October 27: NVDA +0.99%, MU +2.10%.
- $16.3B in revenue against the $80B in losses CNBC reported is exactly why I lean bearish on AI lab IPO valuations. Hype can lift the whole chip chain before the economics are proven.
If SK hynix delivers, the AI trade's wiring holds. If it misses, I'd expect this rally to unwind faster than it built, though I could be wrong if the dividend gets confirmed.
