The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index hit bear market territory on Friday. It fell another 1.6% to complete a 20% drop from its June record high. This sector has lost about $3.3 trillion in global market value since late June. That marks its worst week since the April 2025 tariff meltdown. This is a sharp turn since the index had surged 105% from its March 2026 low before this correction started.
Big names like Marvell Technology, ARM Holdings, and Intel have each dropped more than 30% from recent peaks. The trigger seems to be Chinese startup Moonshot unveiling its Kimi K3 model at the World AI Conference in Shanghai. They call it the largest publicly available open-weight AI model in the world. Moonshot says its performance rivals top US offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic.
This news has revived fears about massive US AI infrastructure spending. If open-weight models from overseas can match proprietary American tech, the capex thesis gets complicated. We are watching the market reprice risk in real time. Investors now question if the current buildout pace makes sense given this new competitive reality.
