The rumor mill went wild this weekend with claims that Anthropic was acquiring Physical Intelligence (https://www.pi.website/), but CEO Karol Hausman shut it down internally with a notably deadpan The Office gif. While the deal itself isn't happening, The Information confirms that real acquisition talks took place this past spring, meaning the speculation wasn't entirely baseless even if the outcome was wrong.

Physical Intelligence is clearly a prime target given its position in the market. The company has raised over $1 billion total and was reportedly in discussions for another $1 billion round at an $11 billion valuation earlier this year. Their pi foundation models have become some of the most widely used tools in robotics research, making them one of the few startups with genuine infrastructure-level traction in the space.

What makes this particularly interesting is the competitive complexity underneath. OpenAI is already an investor in Physical Intelligence, which would create significant antitrust and strategic complications for any Anthropic acquisition. This structural reality likely explains why talks stalled despite clear mutual interest from both sides.

My read is that while this specific deal fell through, the fact that serious conversations happened at this scale signals where the industry is heading. When leading private AI labs and robotics startups engage in acquisition talks at billion-dollar valuations, it suggests the window for independent players in foundational robotics is narrowing fast.
