The U.S. Treasury plans to double its buybacks of long-term securities. Operations will rise from $2 billion to at least $4 billion over the next two months for bonds maturing in 10 to 30 years.

Bond prices reacted right away to this news. The 30-year yield fell about 9 basis points to roughly 5.19% while the 10-year dropped to near 4.64%.

All three major stock indexes also gained around 0.2%. This move ended a three-day losing streak for equities.

I see this shift as significant because U.S. gross national debt now exceeds $40 trillion. Lower yields and higher stock prices followed the announcement directly.

The Treasury is using these operations to manage liquidity at the long end of the curve. They must handle this task while carrying a historically large debt load.

Markets priced in this adjustment very quickly. I think the mechanics of government debt management matter more than ever as debt levels climb.

Both bond and equity investors are watching for stability signals. This operational shift shows that active intervention is needed when supply pressures are high.
